Why Now Is the Right Time to Digitise Your Old Family Tapes

A stack of family videotapes ready for digitisation

Old tapes often sit in lofts, cupboards, drawers and spare rooms for years with the assumption that one day we will get round to sorting them. The problem is that tapes do not last forever, and the machines needed to play them are getting harder to find.

For many families, old VHS, VHS-C, Video8, Hi8, Digital8, S-VHS, MiniDV tapes and recorded DVDs contain the only recordings of birthdays, holidays, school plays, weddings, grandparents and ordinary moments that now mean far more than they did at the time. If you would rather not box those up and send them away, that is exactly what this local service is for.

Why people use me for this

  • No sending irreplaceable tapes away by post.
  • Each tape is handled individually rather than rushed through a bulk process.
  • Cleaning and minor repair work can be carried out where needed before transfer.
  • If you do not know what format you have, a photo is usually enough for me to identify it.

Tapes will not stay in good condition indefinitely

Magnetic tape is not designed to last forever. Age, storage conditions, dust, damp and repeated handling can all affect playback quality over time. Even tapes that look fine from the outside can develop problems once they are played.

In some cases, a tape may simply need a careful clean and transfer. In others, it may need minor repair work before it can be digitised properly. Either way, waiting rarely improves the situation.

A careful local process matters

Not all digitising is equal. I handle each tape individually rather than as part of a rushed bulk process. That matters most when tapes are fragile, inconsistent, or have not been played for many years.

Where needed, I clean tapes, carry out minor repairs where possible, digitise them carefully, and check the recordings properly before returning them. For a lot of people, the local part matters too: no posting a box of family memories away, and no uncertainty about who is handling them.

The equipment is becoming harder to find

Even when the tape itself is still playable, the next problem is often the equipment. VHS players, camcorders and the various machines needed for Video8, Hi8, Digital8 and MiniDV are all becoming less common, and good working ones are getting harder to source and maintain.

A lot of people still have a box of tapes, but no longer have anything at home that can actually play them.

Your memories become much easier to enjoy

One of the saddest things about old tapes is that families often stop watching them simply because they are awkward to access. Once digitised, those videos are much easier to enjoy. You can keep them on your computer, make backups, share them with family members, and watch them without hunting for an old player, the right cables or a tape that may or may not still work.

For many people, the biggest value is not just preservation. It is finally being able to see those moments again.

Older footage often becomes more precious with time

A tape that felt ordinary twenty or thirty years ago can become irreplaceable later. Children growing up. Relatives who are no longer here. Familiar voices. Family homes that have changed. Everyday moments that nobody thought to label as important at the time.

That is often what makes tape digitising so worthwhile. It is not just about converting media from one format to another. It is about rescuing part of a family’s history while it is still possible to do it well.

What formats can be digitised?

I currently digitise the following formats. If you are not sure what you have, send me a photo and I can identify it for you.

  • VHS / S-VHS — Standard full-size videotape, including S-VHS.
  • VHS-C — Compact camcorder cassette.
  • Video8 / Hi8 — Older 8mm camcorder formats.
  • Digital8 — Digital tape using the 8mm shell.
  • MiniDV — Small digital camcorder cassette.
  • DVD — Recorded home-video DVDs.
